As at the end of December 2018, the total number of mobile voice subscriptions was 40,934,875, representing an increase of 1.19 percent from November 2018’s figure of 40,454,055.
Available data from the National Communication Authority (NCA) shows that the total penetration rate by the end of 2018 was 138.88 percent.
During the same period, the total subscriptions of 2G/3G mobile data in the country were 26,184,235 with a penetration rate of 88.84 percent.
The total number of subscriptions for 4G data was 1,128,498 as at the end of December 2018.
Share of Voice Subscription
MTN’s voice subscriptions for the period was 20,092,798 representing an increase of 1.68 percent over November 2018’s figure of 19,759,948. MTN’s market share by the end of 2018 was 49.08 percent.
Vodafone’s mobile voice subscriptions increased from 9,606, 427 as at the end of November 2018 to 9,813,234 as at the end of December 2018. This represents an increase of 2.15 percent. Vodafone’s market share by December 2018 was 23.97 percent.
AirtelTigo’s voice subscriptions decreased from 10,342,271 as at the end of November 2018 to 10,289,491 as at the end of December 2018 indicating a decrease of 0.51 percent. Its market share by the end of 2018 was 25.14 percent as compared to 25.57 percent in November 2018.
Voice subscriptions of Glo decreased from 745,409 as at the end of November 2018 to 739,352 at the end of December 2018. With a decrease of 0.81 percent, their total market share by the end of 2018 was 1.81 percent.

2G/3G Cellular Mobile Data Operators
MTN ended 2018 with 15,641,800 2G/3G mobile data subscriptions. Its market share was 59.74 percent.
The total number of subscriptions for Vodafone’s 2G/3G mobile data in December 2018 was 4,213,054. This is reflected in its market share of 16.09 percent.
AirtelTigo’s 2G/3G mobile data subscriptions for December 2018 was 6,076,649. Its market share by the end of 2018 thus was 23.21 percent.
Glo recorded data subscriber figures of 252,732 at the end of December 2018. This reflects a market share of 0.97 percent.
4G Data Operators
Surfline recorded subscriptions of 55,134. Blu Ghana recorded a total subscription of 347. Broadband Home recorded a total of 25,100 subscriptions with MTN recording a total of 1,047,917 subscriptions. Busy’s figures were not made available and Vodafone, the latest entrant in the 4G market only launched this year and so had no figures for end of 2018.
