Preparations for 2019 National Rice Festival underway

The Ghana Rice Inter-professional Body (GRIB) and key stakeholders in the rice value chain have designed a planned programme of action to mark the celebrations of this year’s National Rice Festival with a climax scheduled for 8th November 2019 at the Efua Sunderland Park in Accra.

The planned programme for the festival is to sensitise consumers about the improved quality of rice produced in Ghana as well as bring to the attention of consumers the nutritional value Ghana rice has over imported rice.

This advocacy measure falls in line with steps being taken by GRIB, the Ministry of Food and Agriculture and the John A. Kufuor Foundation among other stakeholders to increase consumption of locally produced rice considerably.

Scaling up the consumption level of Ghana rice is very critical to GRIB and all stakeholders. Currently, the production level of rice cultivated in all the 16 regions in the country stands at 340, 000 metric tonnes annually and the expectations are that in a year from now, production level would scale up substantially.

Before the festival climaxes in November, the proposed planned programme includse a series of awareness creation and sensitization mechanisms aimed at encouraging consumption of rice produced in Ghana which will be taking place at some selected markets and schools in Accra, Kumasi and other areas.

About 1,000 market women and 500 students are being targeted in the process as the media will be the core medium in the sensitization and awareness creation process.

Speaking with the Goldstreet Business in Accra on Wednesday, President of GRIB, Nana Kwabena Adjei Ayeh II said patrons wanting to be part of the celebrations and who have the zeal that comes along with the festival should be expecting lots of interesting events lined up.

Regarding the previous celebrations in 2018, the event which was attended by rice value chain actors across the country sought to promote quality Ghana rice brands for consumption and GRIB maintained that branding of rice produced in the country has improved significantly and this must equally serve as catalyst for consumption level to surge.
