UK, Ghana targets new strategic partnership

Ghana and the United Kingdom will strike a new strategic partnership to boost trade and investment at the upcoming UK-Ghana Investment Summit.

The event, which is slated for October 15-16, 2018, will congregate over 50 companies from the UK in Accra, to discuss opportunities with government and private sector partners.

The summit will support high level discussions on trade and investment and will leverage opportunities to Ghana securing £1bn in FDI opportunities, which is currently under consideration in key sectors including infrastructure, industry and manufacturing.

High profile attendance

Both governments are optimistic the partnership will focus on economic development, job creation, investment, and one that builds upon common values and shared goals.

President Akufo-Addo will be the special guest of honour, and will deliver the keynote address. He will be joined by the UK’s Minister for Trade & Export Promotion, Baroness Fairhead.

Alongside the summit, both countries will engage in a ministerial dialogue, UK-Ghana Business Council, which will be hosted by Dr. Bawumia and the UK Minister for Africa, Harriett Baldwin.

Commitments

The upcoming event will also signify that the UK is focused on achieving results in trade and investments which is a testament to the UK’s recently announced £20 million Jobs and Economic Transformation (JET) Programme for Ghana.

Ahead of the Summit British High Commissioner, Mr. Iain Walker said: “the UK has been working in close partnership with Ghana to revitalise our strong trading relationship, and ensure it advances our shared prosperity goals.

“We share a common history, but I want to focus on how the UK and Ghana are changing to meet our shared vision of the future, one that builds upon our already strong bilateral partnership. I am delighted that our joint ambition to boost two-way trade and investment has led to a new Strategic Partnership and an Investment Summit,” he said

Tony Burkson, CEO of UK – Ghana Chamber of Commerce said: “as Ghana continues to grow as a nation, so does its immense potential to be a beacon of trade and prosperity within the region.

He added, “the summit is a great opportunity for British businesses to discover potentials and to discuss first hand with the government and businesses about partnerships for investment.”

The summit is in collaboration with the UK Government, the UK-Ghana Chamber of Commerce, the Ministry of Trade and Industry and the Ghana Investment Promotion Council.
