Charles Kwowe Nyaba; Programme Officer of the Peasant Farmers Association of Ghana expects agricultural support to feature prominently in the 2019 budget.
He observed the 2018 budget had lofty promises but the reality had been that government has failed to honour the 200 tractors and its accompanying equipment pledge it made.
Mr. Nyaba also revealed checks by the Small Scale Farmers Association also showed that despite promising to build warehouses for famers across the regions, not a single warehouse had been built adding harvesting machines have yet to also be presented to them.
“It’s regrettable that the government spent US$8 million in importing seeds. The ‘Planting for Food Programme’ is a good initiative but it needs to be better managed,” he submitted.
“Spell out clearly what the GHS500 million Agricultural Fund insurance cover deposited at the Bank of Ghana is to be used for,” the Peasant Farmers executive further demanded.
Mr. Nyaba wants a visible improvement in the lives of small scale farmers given various governments’ claim of holding agriculture dear.
