Leading telecommunication company, MTN, has held a training workshop for some judges on tactics carried out by fraudsters in manipulating mobile money transactions.
The workshop, in collaboration with the e-Crime Bureau, was meant to enlighten the judiciary on measures and means deployed by perpetrators to defraud people.
Relevance of the workshop
“This event is also meant to bring the judiciary up to speed on latest development in the industry and the future, so with that knowledge, they can put together their judgments and thoughts around issues that come to the various courts for prosecutions,” Mr Eli Hini, General Manager of MTN Mobile Money explained.
He stated that MTN in the coming months, will hold discussions with government with regard to the impending plans to impose additional taxes on mobile money.
Engagement with government
“The tax discussion will continue and we will continue to engage government in all relevant institutions because I believe that we all want the good for this country and therefore whatever we do will be aimed towards the best for the economy and we will continue to engage along those lines,” he noted.
Dr. Herbert Gustav Yankson, Chief Superintendent of Police and the Head of Cybercrime Unit was worried about the spate of crime and activities of fraudsters in the mobile money space.
“In fighting cybercrime and especially mobile money fraud, we need the court to give us an order to be able to obtain the data that we need to investigate such cases to understand what goes into the investigations and the need for some quick response,” he added.
He also urged Ghanaians to protect their data especially from third parties. This is because in a human society, there is always a tendency for people to commit crime.
Collaboration from the judges
In a keynote speech, Justice L.L Mensah said, the education and awareness will enable judges to expeditiously and effectively prosecute miscreants who are involved in mobile money scandals.
“I would respectfully entreat your Lordships, Honours and Worships to give priority to the prosecution of those who are entangled in the mobile money fraud net,” Justice Mensah implored.
