Puma Energy, a global integrated mid and downstream energy company with a Ghanaian focus, has dedicated itself to enhancing the road safety knowledge of its Transporter drivers through organising a series of road safety quiz events.
Through these quizzes, numerous drivers from the participating Transporter companies – namely S.O. Frimpong, J. K. Ahiadome, J. K. Horgle and Riet – gain in-depth knowledge on how to keep both themselves and others safe on the road while driving.
However, these quizzes are not without rewards. Each of the winners – first, second and third place winners for each of the four transporters, receive gift packages and loaded shopping vouchers to serve as incentives to diligently learn safe road behaviour and put this into practice.
Speaking at the most recent event, the Health, Safety, Security, Environment and Community Manager (HSSEC) for Puma Energy, Mr. Gideon Owusu Brogya indicated that upholding safety standards along all aspects of the supply chain is critical for Puma Energy.
“Safety is the foundation of the Puma Energy business. With the handling of fuel products – whether at the retail site or on the road, we do not compromise on ensuring that everyone involved adheres to strict safety standards. Any small mistake could cost several lives, so it is imperative that we equip everyone with the knowledge and tools to keep ourselves safe,” said Mr. Brogya.
The CEO of Riet Transport, Mr. Godwin Tamakloe, had the following to say:
“The Transporter Driver Quiz is a very laudable initiative from Puma Energy and the best we have seen in a while from an oil marketing company.
Since the inception of the quiz, I have seen marked improvement in the safety awareness of our drivers ostensibly because of the resources Puma Energy is providing as awards,” said Mr. Tamakloe.
For his part, the Managing Director of J. K. Horgle Transport and Company Limited, Mr. Joseph K. Horgle added that such investments in the drivers is key.
“Investing in the drivers who are in the front line of logistics and transport operations management is key to ensuring safety and efficiency. I therefore welcome any investment in driver training and support the efforts of Puma Energy in this direction,” said Mr. Horgle.
The General Manager of J.K. Ahiadome Transport & Company Limited, Mr. Stanley Owusu-Asamoah, further expressed the benefit of this programme to its drivers.
“This initiative taken by Puma Energy will, in the view of JKAT Management, go a long way to improve safety on our roads. By stimulating a desire for in-depth knowledge of the road signs, attitudes of the Bulk Vehicle Operators towards road safety will be improved, thereby helping to ensure incident-free operations,” said Mr. Owusu-Asamoah.
In addition, Mr. Randy Obeng Frimpong, Director of Internal Controls and HSSE for S. O. Frimpong Transport Limited, lauded this Puma Energy initiative as a huge motivation and recognition for the tremendous work of the drivers, and in line with the ultimate goal of the industry – which is to keep drivers, products, and roads safe.
Puma Energy is deeply passionate about road safety. In addition to partnering with Road Safety NGOs such as AMEND to bring safer roads to school children, this OMC has provided speed ramps, zebra crossings, lollipop stands, road safety education and more to communities in which it operates. Puma Energy is currently running its Safety Campaign designed to enable its staff, customers and community work and drive in a safer way.
