The Institute of Directors (IoD) Ghana has established two additional regional branches in the Ashanti and the Bono Regions on 6 and 7th June 2019 respectively to step up its efforts to enhance effective outreach of good corporate governance practices in the country.

The progress brings the total inaugurated regional branches to four following the establishment of Volta and Eastern Regional branches recently. Members constituted onto the Branch Committee are mandated to serve in championing best corporate practices in the regions.

This forms part of strategic measures and policy direction of the Institute following the passage of the Companies’ Act 2019 to establish ten (10) regional branches by the end of July, 2019 in the quest of bringing good corporate practices to the doorsteps of members and ensure that all operations of the IoD are easily accessible by the public within their respective regions.

MoU

Following the inauguration of the regional branches, the representatives of the Institute signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed last week with officials of Sunyai Technical Institute (STU) to in the Bono Region to promote corporate governance practices.

It will be recalled that the Institute has already started developing collaborations with tertiary and higher educational institutions in the country to promote research, mandatory institute-wide courses and students’ organisations in effective corporate governance and leadership practices.

This collaboration, among other things, is aimed at ensuring that corporate governance is factored into the mindset and curriculum of all tertiary institutions in the country by promoting and advancing the course of teaching, learning, and practice of good corporate governance in the educational institutions and industry.

Background

In October 1997, Commonwealth Heads of State met in Edinburgh, Scotland and resolved to promote good corporate governance within the Commonwealth. In June 1998, the Commonwealth Secretariat, the Commonwealth Association for Corporate Governance and the State Enterprises Commission of Ghana organized a three-day workshop in Accra which led to the birth of Institute of Directors-Ghana, subsequently registered on 21st May, 1999.
