The Minister for Aviation, Cecilia Abena Dapaah has called for more participation of women in the aviation industry.
At a meeting with delegations from the Pamela Bridgewater Foundation, the Minister said the industry has had a mystic around it, which needs to be broken.
Dapaah indicated that more needs to be done in schools, by introducing subjects which would encourage girls into aeronautic engineering, among others.
She recalled the efforts of Women in Aviation International, Ghana Chapter, to draw children form age 6 to 12 years, with the to demystify the notion that the sector is not for women, due to the male domination.
Women in Aviation International serve as a primary example of a non-profit organization implementing outreach that is aimed at underrepresented groups.
Celebrated worldwide, Girls in Aviation Day is designed to introduce and educate girls up to 17 years of age on the many career choices and lifestyle possibilities offered by the aviation/aerospace industry.
In presenting the Humanity Magazine Award, the President of Pamela Bridgewater Foundation, Yahaya Alhassan said the award was to recognise the Minister’s courage and enthusiasm in transforming the aviation industry.
“We believe that as a new ministry, there is a lot more to be done in order to promote safety,” Alhassan noted.
The Pamela Bridgewater project is a campaign to provide future, welfare and social security to disadvantaged girls and children popularly known as kayayei through training and education, advocacy, protection, research, among others.
