…expects to to rake in GHS7.54 million
The Ghana Revenue Authority, (GRA) is aiming to rake in not less than GHS7.54 million from confiscated vehicles across the country.
The authority has embarked on an exercise to seize vehicles that have not been properly registered or with the requisite import duties not paid on them.
In a similar exercise last year, the Authority seized 754 of such vehicles while over 400 more have been seized between January to April this year.
The vehicles are mostly brought into the country from neighboring countries under ECOWAS protocol.
Briefing the press ahead of the exercise in Accra, Commissioner-General of the GRA, Emmanuel Kofi Nti revealed that there are many such vehicles in the country, hence the need for the operation.
“The exercise is to create awareness that such special operations will be sustained and all persons, who own vehicles or trucks and all other prospective buyers, should always contact customs offices for verification of the status of the vehicles they intend to purchase.”
Software has, therefore, been acquired to instantly check whether a vehicle has gone through the duty processes.
Owners of impounded vehicles have up to 80 days to regularize the registration of their vehicles or have them auctioned.
Officials from the customs division of the GRA have been deployed to the offices of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) to ease the process.
The entire exercise forms part of efforts to widen the tax net to meet government’s revenue target of GHS39.8billion.
