The International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) Managing Director, Christine Lagarde has donated US$15,000 to a non-governmental organisation handling the welfare of head porters also known as ‘kayayei’ at the Agblogbloshie Market in Accra.
Madam Lagarde made the donation which is equivalent to about GHc75,000 in the local currency to the Premium African Youth Development Platform to aid with legal literacy, basic education, nutrition and general wellbeing of the girls.
“I didn’t know of the kayayei in Ghana but I now know about the gravity of the problem,” the French national stated, adding that both formal education coupled with informal education was necessary for them to escape from the grip of poverty.
She was full of praise for Aku Hornam Kevi, the Executive Director of the NGO for extracting herself from poverty and a bleak future by taking up education and becoming who she is today.
10,000 marginalised and impoverished females, it is hoped, will gain from the programme in 2019.
