General Manager for Mobile Money Services at MTN Ghana, Eli Hene has announced that 90percent of victims of the Savannah Brokerage Investment (SBI) scam have been reimbursed.
He said payments were effected after interviews sessions with the affected clients and supported by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and the Bank of Ghana (BoG).
He said the remaining10 percent who are yet to receive funds are those who used agents for the transactions.The yet to be paid are those victims who used MTN Mobile Money Agents or Merchants requesting for investment to be made on their behalf. They must provide at least the three mandatory items for identification before refund would be made i.e. Name of Agent/Branch(Mandatory), Reference Number/ Username (Mandatory), Amount (mandatory),Transaction ID and Date.
Mr. Hene made the disclosure at the sidelines of the Mobil Money Promo Awards where customers who used MoMo for payments rather than transfers were rewarded.
He said as next year marks the 10th anniversary of the MoMo system, customer scan expect great rewards for their loyalty.
Customers lost GHc12.288 million in a scheme operated by Savannah Brokerage Investment (SBI) Limited on its network. The network says it uncovered the suspected Ponzi scheme a few months ago and took steps to safeguard the interest of its customers by reporting the case to the Regulator and the Police. MTN was then authorized to freeze the wallet for investigations to be conducted.
