The Asante Akim Central Municipal Assembly is targeting the establishment of a starch factory in the municipality, under government’s One District One Factory (1D1F) programme.
To this end, the Assembly is in the final stages of securing a 50 acre land at Dwease for the cultivation of special cassava nursery farms for distribution to out-growers to feed the factory.
Mrs. Susan Akomeah, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), who made the announcement, disclosed that the Assembly had submitted proposals to the Ayensu Starch Factory for collaboration.
He was speaking at a stakeholders’ forum at Konongo-Odumase to brief the constituents on how she had fared so far after a year in office, at Konongo-Odumase.
The forum, which was attended by chiefs, assembly members, heads of decentralized departments and the media, afforded her the opportunity to interact with the constituents and give account of her one year stewardship.
She said a cassava commercialization proposal had also been presented to the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC), through the Ministry of Trade and Industry, seeking for investors.
Twenty farmers, she said, had been supplied with improved cassava planting materials, saying that, it would be extended to other farmers in preparation for the impending factory.
The MCE also disclosed that a feasibility study was on-going for the establishment of a stone quarry at Dwease, adding that, the assembly was committed to creating an enabling environment for the establishment of industries in the municipality.
This, she said, would not only boost the assembly’s revenue mobilization drive but also improve the local economy while creating employment to the teeming unemployed youth.
On agriculture, Mrs. Akomeah said the department of agriculture had been provided with an amount of GHS13,126.00 to nurse oil palm, cocoa and coconut seedlings for distribution to farmers under the Planting for Export and Rural Development Programme.
She said the construction of a Community Health and Planning Services (CHPS) compound at Kyekyewere had been completed while that of Kyekyebiase had been given a facelift with the provision of a waiting shed, landscaping and pavement of the compound.
Plans are also advanced to connect the two facilities to the national grid to enhance service delivery, she added.
