President Donald Trump sparred with journalists during his post-midterms press conference on Tuesday. He ordered some reporters to “sit down,” and called CNN’s Jim Acosta a “rude, terrible person.”
The president lost his temper when Mr Acosta began to ask Mr Trump on why he continues to label the “migrant caravan,” made up of asylum seekers and migrants seeking refuge in the US, as an “invasion.”
“That’s enough, put down the mic,” Mr Trump said to the CNN reporter. “I tell you what, CNN should be ashamed of itself having you working for them. You are a rude, terrible person, you shouldn’t be working for CNN. You’re a very rude person, the way you treat [Press Sec] is horrible.”
Prior to the spat with reporters, Mr Trump called the midterms election result a “huge victory.” On Tuesday night, the Democrats won back control of the House of Representatives in a midterm election victory that will check Donald Trump’s agenda over the next two years and lead to a multitude of investigations into his business dealings and his administration.
The party needed a net gain of 23 seats to break the Republicans’ eight-year hold on the House that began with the tea party revolt of 2010. By early morning on Wednesday they had picked up 24 – a new crop of politicians who are more diverse, more female and more progressive than ever before.
While the Republican Party maintained control of the Senate, a new era of divided government is set to begin.
“Tomorrow will be a new day in America,” Democratic House Leader Nancy Pelosi said at a victory party in Washington.
