Ghana has been selected to host the first mega showpiece of the 41st International Data Protection Conference in June this year for the African Network of Data Protection Authorities.
The selection by the International Conference of Data and Privacy Commissioners (ICDPC) is as a result of Ghana’s efforts in the enforcement and compliance of data protection regulation, this is according to the Data Protection Commission (DPC).
The Conference seeks to provide leadership at international level in data protection and privacy. It does this by connecting the efforts of 122 privacy and data protection authorities from across the globe.
Partners their participation include the United Nations (UN), African Union (AU), ECOWAS, Council of Europe, Commonwealth Data Commissioners, Microsoft, Facebook and a host of other data controllers and processors.
The Conference further demonstrate Ghana’s determination as a leading voice both on the continent and globally. The event is expected to position Ghana on the international stage as a champion of protecting data of its citizens. This also translate in the ease of doing business and boosting investor confidence as companies and institutions are assured of data protection of their respective staff.
In a keynote address read on behalf of the Minister of Communications Ursula Owusu-Ekuful by a Deputy Minister in the sector, Vincent Sowah Odotei during this year’s Data Protection and Privacy day celebrations in Accra, he said the Commission has opened a new chapter in enforcing accountability and empowering data subject and further creating awareness on the need for people the compliance status on the companies and institutions they are dealing with.
The Commission is an agency of the Ministry of Communications.
