The General Secretary of the Industrial and Commercial Workers’ Union, Solomon Kotei is urging workers in formal employment to join worker unions to protect their interest else have themselves to blame in times of trouble.
He stated the (ICU) safeguards the interest of workers yin terms of salary payment, negotiation of severance packages and ensuring general worker safety.
The call follows reports some workers of the defunct banks did not commit themselves to unions so found redundancy packages given them by their former employers or joint receivers unfavourable.
Meanwhile the Ghana Revenue Authority is warning staff who collide with recalcitrant individuals and businesses to dodge tax payments that they will be penalised without mercy should they be outed.
Although at the start of each year, revenue targets are set, on occasions the targets are missed thanks to leaks and other suspicious means.
The Ghana Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) Operators Association is meanwhile alleging more than 7,000 of its members will lose their jobs if government goes ahead with its Cylinder Recirculation Module (CRM).
At a Cabinet meeting on October 12, 2017, President Akufo-Addo, on the advice of Cabinet, directed the activation of the Cylinder Recirculation Model of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) distribution by which LPG Bottling Plants are sited away from congested commercial and populated centres to procure, brand, maintain and fill empty cylinders distributed to consumers and households through retail outlets.
The model involves filling of LPG cylinders at designated refilling plants before onward distribution to customers at retail outlets called exchange points.
It is the new system President of the Ghana Liquefied Petroleum Gas Operators Association; Togbe Adaklu V says will throw 7,000 people out of job.
He holds there are about 601 LPG filling Stations across the country with direct employment of about 3000 and indirect employment of about 4000 people who will lose their livelihood hence opposition to the new module.
As result of the conversion of refilling plants into autogas outlets, about 400 jobs are going to be lost, the new managers concede. They however say an estimated 4,500 new jobs under the LDCs, LBPs, LTC and door to door delivery will be created.
