Living in challenging times that test people’s ethical ability, Managing Director of Tullow Ghana, Mr. Kwaku Awotwi is entreating university graduates to exhibit a sense of integrity that will propel them in building credible professional standards.
According to him, abiding by this natural rule would result in ethical and effective leadership irrespective of the field of work they find themselves.
He was speaking on the theme: “Ethical and Servant Leadership for National Development” during the third session of the 19th Congregation of the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) last Saturday in Accra.
“You must aspire to be not just any leader, but one with ethics and integrity. You don’t have to hold a high position to be an ethical leader, but as you embark on the next phase of your lives, you will have many opportunities to demonstrate ethical leadership and influence many”, he reiterated.
He noted that having worked in various private and public institutions for almost three decades had given him opportunities for many lessons on ethical and servant leadership, stressing that his time at institutions such as Kaiser Aluminium, Ashanti Gold and Volta River Authority taught him about the importance of standing by acceptable values and having the courage to spearhead a rightful course.
Addressing the students on what is regarded as standing by one’s values, Mr. Awotwi mentioned that integrity is about “saying what you mean, and meaning what you say as well as keeping ones promises.
It is believed that incorporating integrity and honesty into the setting up of a business entity on the basis of empathy and responsibility would largely build a sense of trust among the clients and this would in tend contribute to the company’s success and sustainability.
A special portrait was presented to Mr. Awotwi by the Governing Council of GIMPA. In expressing his acceptance towards the gesture, he praised the Institute of being the pacesetters in Ghana’s Human Capital Development, further stressing that “if you are in business, Information Technology, Finance, there are places for you at Tullow”, he said.
