The GIZ Ghana has presented relief packages to 100 households in Nima in the Ayawaso East Municipality of the Greater Accra Region, intended to reach about 500 persons.
The relief package consists of 100 bags of rice, 100 bottles of two litres of cooking oil, 25 boxes of mackerel, 21 boxes of tomato paste, 500 pieces of carbolic soap, 7 boxes of bar soap and 100 one litre bottles of hand sanitizers.
The contribution forms part of GIZ’s measures aimed at supporting communities and partner institutions in their fight against the spread of the novel Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19). The move, according to the GIZ, has also helped to ease the socio-economic impact on communities mostly affected by the virus.
The team, led by Country Director Regina Bauerochse Barbosa, presented the items at the office of the National Chief Imam, and was received by the Chief Imam, Sheikh Dr. Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu, on behalf of the Nima community.
In her remarks, the Country Director, Regina Bauerochse Barbosa, explained that “GIZ Ghana is very committed to safeguard the health, safety, and security of its employees, and we are guided by the GIZ values of protecting human rights and treating our employees and communities, especially those who are vulnerable and less privileged.”
“In times like these when COVID-19 has impacted social and economic aspects of life, we should interpret the social distancing requirement to mean physical distancing, but not to distance ourselves from the concerns and challenges of more vulnerable groups. Therefore, in solidarity with our neighbours in Nima, the management and staff took a collective decision to support the needy within the municipality,” she added.
She hoped that the gesture would help ease the burden of residents during the holy month of Ramadan.
Receiving, the National Chief Imam expressed his profound gratitude to GIZ Ghana and asked that Allah continue to bless the Institution to grow and succeed.
He insisted that the relief packages will be extended to the needy and be put to good use. He concluded with a word of prayer, asking Allah to protect the nation, management and staff of GIZ Ghana, and all others from the COVID-19 pandemic.
