Novelty in commerce has gone up to a great extent. There are “real estate” dealers selling land located just about 384,400 km away from the earth, on the moon! The land comes along with attractive offers but then the question is how authentic is the deal?
Article II of the Outer Space Treaty made by the United States, the United Kingdom and the Soviet Union in 1967 states, “Outer space, including the Moon and other celestial bodies is not subject to national appropriations by claim of sovereignty by means of use or occupation, or by any other means”. However permission is granted for exploration and use of outer space including the moon, the benefit and in the interests of all countries.
There are people including celebrities who have “bought” land on the moon either for themselves or as a unique gift for others. Those who claim to own land on the moon do so on the basis of the Lunar Settlement Initiative. 95% of the sale proceeds are said to be deposited in an escrow account that shall be controlled by an independently elected Board of Directors.
So, despite the gravitational force on the moon being only one-sixth of that on the earth, our celestial neighbour is making an attempt to attract prospective buyers from our planet.
